Did Van Gogh inspire contextual advertising?

I caught up with the Roderick and Cynthia from SixApart – which now has 180M uniques per month – last night in San Francisco. The conversation drifted to travel, favorite places, museums, the impressionists, the Musee D’orsay in Paris and MoMa in NYC.

It got me thinking back to the days of art class where we learn’t about the “broken color technique” the impressionists used – which if you think about it has similar pattern techniques to keyword semantic technology. The pattern of paint and canvass and the patter of keywords, negative keywords and semantic relationships between the keywords (like painting) is an artform. Can you see the patterns?
